Thanksgiving Gratitude: Discovering Renewal and Freedom at Serenity Vista
I’m an adult and in charge of my own life: if I want to use drugs and alcohol, I will. If you had my life, you’d drink, too. No one understands me. This is who I am – I can’t help it. I’m a victim: poor me, pour me another drink. These are not excuses to drink, they are REAL reasons.
I need to use drugs and alcohol to cope with stress. My kids are on my nerves. My wife is driving me nuts. In fact, so is my ex-wife. I need a few drinks to take the edge off. My job is so boring/dreadful/overwhelming, I need to get high to get through the day. These are not excuses to drink, they are facts!
Everyone else gets high. I am no different than my friends. In fact, that girl drinks way more than me. At least I didn’t wreck my car like that guy. Did you hear about so-and-so? Her life is really messed up. Look at that dude – I heard he’s been in rehab four times for drugs and alcohol! Excuses to drink? I know that guy has them, but not me.
I’m not hurting anyone but myself. I’ll quit drinking tomorrow. When I get married I’ll stop using drugs and alcohol. I’ll think about sobering up if I ever get a better job.
You may have a thousand and one excuses to drink, a thousand reasons to use drugs and alcohol, but you only need one reason to quit. You will always find reasons to use drugs and alcohol if you are looking for them. Are you justifying or attempting to deflect attention to others? Are you planning a geographical cure? Newsflash, wherever you go, you bring yourself and your addiction to drugs and alcohol with you, be it to a new marriage, a new job, or a new location.
In fact it’s very likely that if you bring drugs and alcohol into your new marriage, it will not survive. That better job will never come to fruition. You’ll be stuck right where you are because drugs and alcohol have clipped your wings. You’ll wallow in the mire of despair and desperation, sinking slowly deeper and deeper until you have suffocated, either figuratively or literally. But you only need one reason to quit.Find that reason. Then let us help you quit. We promise, there is life after drugs and alcohol.
